The Dingle Workhouse Project

An Economic Impact and Feasibility Study was prepared for the redevelopment of the former Dingle Workhouse and has been submitted to Kerry County Council and Údarás na Gaeltachta for review. A very brief outline of the proposal is to include the following elements:

  • an Enterprise and Education Centre where we can expand on the work of the Dingle Hub to foster future skills.
  • A Makerspace workshop to provide a prototyping space for community artistic, entrepreneurial and educational projects.
  • A community use meeting and exhibition space.
  • the protected second floor will remain as is and use audio-visual and virtual reality tools to create an Interpretive Centre.
  • a visitor orientation centre to help provide an understanding of the culture and heritage of the peninsula.

An application was submitted to the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund on 27.09.218 for funding to move this proposal to Master Plan stage and, if the application is approved, we look forward to running community workshops and events to capture your inputs to the project.

Údarás na Gaeltachta as lead applicant, and Mol Teic, as one of the project partners, are
delighted to announce that the application, under the Rural Regeneration Development Fund
(RRDF), for funding to develop a Master Plan for the former Dingle Workhouse has been
successful.

The RRDF funding will be used to build on the Feasibility Study that Mol Teic commissioned
(with support from Udaras na Gaeltachta and Kerry County Council) as part of a consultation in
2018. The Master Plan will build upon the design concepts, as already approved, to produce a
detailed proposal for the re-development of the protected and socially important structures
that comprise the former Dingle Workhouse and surrounding grounds.

The Master Plan will will include the following elements:
(1) Delivering a completed design, to include structural drawings and building services,
inclusive of the delivery of fire and disability access certificates;
(2) Lodging a full planning application to Kerry County Council;
(3) Having an accurate cost-analysis for the delivery of the project, for onwards submission
for the funding required to deliver the finished product.
(4) Specific submissions to the various funding bodies for the different elements of the
overall complex.

It is proposed that the property and lands be redeveloped with the following main aims, as
outlined in the Feasibility Study:
 Develop a visitor experience focusing on the history, geology, heritage, archaeology,
culture and Irish language of the Dingle Peninsula.
 Develop a 60 space Innovation Hub, that will continue the work being done by Mol
Teic to facilitate greater employment on the Dingle Peninsula; promote collaboration
amongst start-ups and established businesses; and facilitate the development and
testing of innovative solutions and technology.
 Provision of space for use by the community for meetings, education and events,
including a lecture hall, subject to usage constraints.
 Provide a Maker/Creative space to support collaboration between the technology,
business and creative/design sectors.
 In the context of the transition of the Dingle Peninsula to a Low Carbon Society,
develop the former Workhouse as an exemplar sustainable building.

Ag tógáil todhchaí gile d’Iar-Theach Oibre agus Ospidéal Dhaingean Uí Chúis
Pleananna chun athfhorbairt a dhéanamh ar Iar-Theach Oibre agus Ospidéal

Dhaingean Uí Chúis
(Daingean Uí Chúis, Luan 18 Feabhra 2019)
Tá ríméad ar Údarás na Gaeltachta, an príomhiarrathóir, agus Mol Teic, ceann de
phairtnéirí an tionscadail, a fhógairt go bhfuil éirithe leis an iarratas, faoin gCiste
Forbartha do Athnuachan Tuaithe (CFAT), i gcomhair maoiniú chun Máistirphlean a
ullmhú d’Iar-Theach Oibre Dhaingean Uí Chúis.

Bainfear úsáid as an maoniú chun tógáil ar an Staidéar Féidearthachta a
choimisiúnaigh Mol Teic (le tacaíocht ó Údarás na Gaeltachta agus Comhairle Contae
Chiarraí) mar chuid de phróiseas comhairliúcháin i 2018. Tógfaidh an Máistirphlean
ar na coincheapanna deartha atá ceadaithe cheana féin chun cápéis mholta sonrach
a chur ar fáil d’athfhorbairt na structúir – idir struchtúir chosanta agus struchtúir eile
a bhfuil tábhacht shóisialta ag baint leo – atá ina gcuid den Iar-Theach Oibre agus an
fearainn máguaird.

Beidh na gnéithe seo a leanas mar chuid den Mháistirphlean:
(1) Leagan amach críochnaithe a mbeidh líníochtaí struchtúrtha agus seirbhísí
tógála mar chuid de, chomh maith le conas mar a chinnteofar go mbainfear
amach idir teastais tine agus teastais rochtana do dhaoine faoi mhíchumas;
(2) Iarratas iomlán pleanála a chur isteach go Comhairle Contae Chiarraí;
(3) Anailís costais atá cruinn timpeall ar sholáthar an tionscadail, agus a bheidh
oiriúnach le cur isteach mar chuid de na hiarratais i gcomhair an mhaoiniú sin
a bheidh riachtanach chun an tionscadal a chur i gcrích.
(4) Aighneachtaí ar leith do na heagrais mhaoinithe éagsúla maidir le gnéithe
difriúla den ionad iomlán.

Moltar go ndéanfar athfhorbairt ar an réadmhaoin agus a tailte mar atá rianaithe sa
Staidéar Féidearthachta, leis na príomhspriocanna seo a leanas:
 Eispéireas Cuairteora a fhorbairt bunaithe ar stair, geolaíocht, oidhreacht,
seandálaíocht, cultúr agus Gaeilge leithis Chorca Dhuibhne.
 Mol Nuálaíochta le spás i gcomhair 60 duine a fhorbairt, a leanfaidh ar aghaidh leis an obair atá á déanamh ag Mol Teic chun breis fostaíochta a chur ar fáil i gCorca Dhuibhne; chun comhoibriú i measc gnóthaí nuathionscanta agus gnóthaí seanbhunaithe a chur chun cinn; agus chun forbairt agus cur I bhfeidhm réiteach agus teicneolaíocht nuálaíoch a spreagadh.
 Spás oiriúnach – le halla léachta – a chur ar fáil don bpobal i gcomhair
cruinnithe, oideachais agus imeachtaí, ag brath ar srianta úsáide.
 Spás Déantúis/Cruthaitheachta a chur ar fáil chun tacú le comhoibriú idir na
hearnálacha teicneolaíochta, gnó agus cruthaitheachta/deartha.
 An iar-Theach Oibre a fhorbairt mar fhoirgneamh inmhartha samplach i
gcomhthéacs aistriú leithinis Chorca Dhuibhne go Sochaí Carbóin Íseal.
