ESB Networks Trial

Ambassador Programme (2018-2021)

To assess the impact of various energy efficient technologies on home energy usage, ESB networks retrofitted the homes and businesses of five “ambassadors” on the Dingle Peninsula.  These five were selected from a pool of over 70 interested people and businesses, and part of their role was to inform the larger community on how they could reduce energy usage and costs.

The renewable and clean energy technologies installed at trial participants’ properties included:

  • Solar PV systems
  • Residential-scale batteries
  • Air source heat pumps
  • Electric vehicles, smart EV chargers and bi-directional (V2G) chargers
  • Home energy monitoring systems
  • Smart devices

Electric Vehicle Trial (2021)

ESB Networks launched a one-year electric vehicle (EV) trial in January 2021. The objective of the trial was to understand how electric vehicle charging affects the local electricity network and see how any effect could be minimized by using smart EV charging technologies.

Following an extensive local engagement campaign, the project selected 10 new EV Ambassadors from hundreds of applications. The existing five Dingle Project Ambassadors also received an EV; and two cars were made available, on a managed basis, to the wider community.  Smart chargers were installed at the homes of all 15 participants on the trial.
